Upgrade Complete

Looks like the Calendar plugin isn’t working anymore and the theme has a wrong link. That’s all. This was exceptionally easy and fast. WordPress rocks!

Upgrading to WordPress 2.3..

Crossed fingers. This will be the last post in 2.0.

EUP Notes

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

You know how you tend to pickup things by being in the room with some people. Podcasts do that for me alot. Movies, websites, techniques, references all lead to some very interesting discoveries. I’m always writing little things down on a pad to research later. The most recent Exploring Unexplained Phenomena is a good example. There are a lot of links from this one that are with checking out.

New Garden Blog

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

The garden posts can get kind of long and there are some things I want to post, but don’t want to inundate this blog. I also wanted to try out one of the commercial blog hosts. So, I started Stephen’s Garden Blog on Wordpress.com. Take a look. It’s got a different theme and a couple of new widgets like showing the last 3 Flickr photos that have been uploaded. All the pictures used will be ones that I’ve taken.

It’s free with 50 of upload space. Takes the management hassles away.

Photos Uploaded

Monday, April 9th, 2007

There’s not time now to write all the projects and events that I took photos of the past month. Suffice it to say they are all uploaded and should contain the dates that they were taken so the will be in chronological order.

Some of my favorites are the flowers and animals in the yard. Check out this squirrel.

Flickr: Printing

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Flickr has been great so far for storing photos and making them available online. This morning I went up there print the photos in a set. I don’t need high quality prints. My printer will work just fine. What are my options? Have them printed at Walmart! Great, so in a few days maybe I can pick them up. Unfortunately, that will be way too late, cost way too much, and for too high a quality.

Doesn’t it seem like there always has to be that one massively obvious deficiency in everything. Thank God, I keep these things on my computer. Maybe Windows knows how to print jpegs. Stupid Flickr.

Comments

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

It surprised me how many people were following my house buying adventure. Feel free to leave a comment or question on the appropriate post. Other people might have the same question, like two blond cousins I know. There are not any passwords. I did this on purpose to make it easy for people to reply. Everything has to get approved it goes up, which means checking my email. That’s because a lot of spam tries to get on as comments. Just look at the Spam Counter. You don’t want to see it; just poker and porn.

Inline Pictures

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I was listening to Net@Nite and they commented on how boring large blocks of text look. Wow, I have a lot of that. So, I tried editing one of the posts that had pictures. This took a little bit of work. It’ll be easier next, but not easy. I’m starting to realize the limitation of WordPress 1s editor. Table are very hard to do and getting text to flow around pictures is time consuming. It think the results pay off, but I may be editing more if I’m in a hurry.

In researching this ability, I discovered 2-3 promising WordPress 2.x plugins for Flickr photos. So, the upgrade to it should provide some useful enhancements. I really hope the editor is improved.

WordPress 2.1

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

The latest Wordpress was released yesterday. It looks very interesting. Of particular interest are the video upload manager, bundled Askismet spam plugin, and tabbed WYSIWYG editor. I’ll update in the next few weeks. Though everything should look the same.

Photos moving to Flickr

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

I’m moving the photo management to Flickr. This should bring easier maintanence, easier submission, easier integration with the blog. The current Gallery based photo manager will stay in place to maintain the links and for certain picks that might not be good with the Flickr User Agreement. Perhaps it will add more sharing, since others can open their own Flickr account and submit from cell phones or computers.

Here is the link to the profile.

Tips:

  1. Upload your photos first to last. The default is to show you your most recent photos.
  2. Upload the original full size camera pics, the Flicker Uploadr will convert them, don’t worry about bandwidth. The orignal pics have properties like date, time, location, etc. that may be useful in tracking down the photos later.
  3. Get the Pro account. $25/yr is worth it. Otherwise you are limited to 3 sets, 200 visible pics, and 100 mb/mo upload. For any of my relatives who don’t want to pay, let me know and I’ll give you the info to upload to my account.

Blog Spam

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

I’ve had some issues for some time with blog spam. Comments on posts from “people” with URLs and links to poker, sex enhancement, etc. sites. My past response was to block the offending IP address range. Most of it was coming from offshore so that wasn’t much of a problem. None of this spam has ever shown up on the site, because I manually approve all the comments posted.

Recently, I’ve had people trying to hit the site in the US and getting blocked. So, I installed Akismet spam blocker and I’ll relax the IP blocking. We’ll see if that works. Some other alternatives are comments on login only, captcha pictures, or other spam plugins. However, I want this as simple as possible. No ones going to remember passwords or try very hard to leave a 1 sentence comment.
