Rants

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Mr Paulson’s last job, which he left in 2005, was CEO of Goldman Sachs. This is one of the companies to be bailed out. Paulson is one of the CEOs who ran the financial services industry in to the ground. His own net worth is $700m. Should he be responsible for spending the public money in an unlimited way to remove the consequences of his own and his peers’ actions?

This rescue of people who have lots of money will create a crisis for people who do not. There will be no bailout for them. For example, the home mortgage “crisis” has ignored the vast majority of individuals with homes and focused strongly on corporations who encouraged and profitted for the irresponsible spending and loaning.

Is it funny that the words used to describe these financial issues are so non-financial? When I bought my house the contracts were thick and the language dense. Yet the homes loans are a poison to these companies. Poison? Really? It restates the issue to ignore as much as possible the fact that these corporations made their own decisions which led to their bankruptcy. There is no poison or toxin or accident here. There is mismanagement, irresponsibility, incompetence, stupidity,..

One last thing oddity. Freaky really. Tivo caught Bob Schieffer interviewing Barney Frank and a Republic congressman. And the Republican droned on and on about how this financial crisis was all due to lack of regulation, we need more regulation, these companies have been running wild. Hasn’t the Republican theme song for 20+ years been, we don’t need no stinking regulation, regulations are big government – not us, and free market rulz. Who lobotomized this congressman? What did they do with the real Republicans? At least admit your prior position was the opposite of today’s position. Take ownership and responsibility. Be accountable, another Republican truism. And step down en masse. Fire yourself. This goes for Democrats without whose votes the removal of regulations would not have taken place..

Commuter Bike

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I’ve been riding the superbike around town and it’s not the best bike in the world for that. Streets are a little bumpier than roads. You have to stop all the time. Lights are a necessity. As are a chain guard, fenders, brakes I can reach easily, a carrier rack, and a whole lot fewer gears.

Last night I found the perfect bike. It’s not just a repurposed, cheaper mountain bike. It has me drooling. Unfortunately, they are out of stock. At $560 for all of these features it’s easy to see why.

This German engineered beauty is the perfect bicycle to hit the town in, run to the store, or to ride around and work on! This wonderful bike has a comfortable U-shaped light-weight aluminum frame, style, dependability and convenience all rolled into one fantastic bicycle.

We already mentioned the alloy frame for a solid foundation. It also has a quality Shimano Nexus 3 speed internal hub – this means smooth reliable shifting for up and down hills, and flat terrain. The braking system consists of a coaster foot brake and front and rear handbrakes, this will allow for safe and easy braking. You are also getting alloy rims, an alloy stem and brakes.

The Biria Superlight 3 comes fully loaded, with both front and rear generator lights with Shimano Dynamo Hub, a rear rack, fenders and a kickstand. The frame size is available in two size – a 17 and 19″ frame with 700c wheels. This is a very well crafted German designed bicycle that will last for years. The frame has a lifetime warranty.

Full Specs:

* Frame: Aluminum 7005 17″(44cm) or 19″ (48cm)
* Fork: Hi-Ten Unicrown
* Rims: Alloy 700c
* Tires: 700 x 38c
* Derailleur: 3 Speed Shimano Nexus Internal Hub
* Stem: Alloy
* Handlebar: Commuter
* Brakes: Coaster brake in rear and Alloy V-Brake in front & Rear
* Color: See Pull Down Menu Next To Image
* Included Extras: Integrated rear carrier, front and rear generator lights, kickstand

NOTE: Biria Bicycles are meant to be assembled at a bike shop by a qualified mechanic to ensure proper assembly and performance.

The Biria Bicycles were introduced into the US market in early 2002. These German-made bicycles have redefined comfort in the bicycle industry. With their uniquely designed step- frames, and comfortable seating positions, Biria bikes have satisfied the needs for people who seek safety and pleasure in riding their bikes. A Biria bike will be the most comfortable bicycle you’ll ever ride. Whether you are going shopping, running errands or just taking a ride in town with friends, a Biria bicycle will make it a lot of fun.

This wonderful bicycle is designed, and engineered in Germany by Biria. Experience German engineering at its finest!

CEO Pay for Failed Companies

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

AIG, Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae have all been bailed out in the past 3 weeks. How much have their CEOs made in the past three years for performance that should have destroyed their companies. Neither Freddie or Fanny CEOs still hold that position. So, I listed the severance packages.

If we took the salaries of board members, CEOs, VPs of the companies purchased or rescued by the Federal government could we get $.5b to $1b from 100 or so responsible individuals of the estimated $1t that we will pay out.

Company CEO Co. $ Year $$$ Severance $
AIG Martin Sullivan 8.75b 2005
AIG Martin Sullivan 15.4b 2006 $26m

New MacBook and MB Pro in October

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The rumors have it that new MacBook Pros appear in mid October. They should be more like the MacBook Airs. I can’t wait. Just 1 month. Maybe. Apple doesn’t let you know ahead of time. The stores think so too, since many Macs are on clearance.

Doors Ordered

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Ok, so I purchased the doors yesterday. Tried to do it the day before, but that was just one of those days when everything goes wrong. For example, I barely bumped my toe on the kitchen cabinet and split the nail. I went to turn in my code and the code reviewer was out for the day. I went to setup a meeting and my logon doesn’t have access. I got to Lowe’s right after and jacked around for 30 minutes, because the guy handling my special order was on break or something. Two computers were supposed to come in and instead I got the $30 USB card part of the order instead of the $600 computer part. After my bike ride, I tried to take my watch off. It wouldn’t come off. So, I tore it apart while taking it off. All day these petty, stupid little things kept happening. None of this is too out of the ordinary. All on one day is annoying.

Thus, it’s not too suprising that my debit/credit card wouldn’t work to purchase the doors. I was the guy holding up the one cash register for everyone. And I had to walk out w/o actually buying the bulk of the order. The topper happened the next day. A 1 dime suspicious purchase had triggered my card to be locked. After a call to the bank, they had actually tried to reach me earlier, everything was straightened out and the doors should be ordered. 1 dime. Stupid little things.

Palin Emails

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

The point of the leaked Palin email account is that she was caught using and conspiring to use personal email accounts for government business. All the stuff about Feds catching the “thieves” is bullshit. She should know better. The state of Alaska pays people to insure that email is private. She threw out that work and money. Dumb. Irresponsible. And now caught.

Will the story focus on her actions or the hackers? If it focuses on her, then other elected government officials will stop or slow down this illegal activity. If it focuses on the hackers, then she was acting correctly and the problem was the hackers and officials will be encouraged to break the law knowing the FBI will not come after them, as it should, but after the hackers.

I think that since she used her email account for government business, it should be given over the the lawsuits against her seeking information about her actions in the 2 short years she has be gov. That also means much of her two years becomes public due to the lawsuits. She opened the door.

Ideas for the website

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

1.
News based on separate, specific list of RSS feeds, combined to appear as “one” hourly, daily newspaper. A place to go for recent Bicycle news. Something I could use. A top 5 snippets on the sidebar.

Mashing Up Feeds Using Yahoo Pipes

2.
News from many feeds filtered based on certain keywords to sort or generate a new feed. A list of keywords shift certain stories to the top. For example, to get the release notifications, defects, betas, changes, etc.

3.
Making a post, like an essay, stick around longer. Some content is just commentary or transient, “look my new MacBook Pro came in” But a few articles are longer and well thought out.

House Doors

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

I’ll place the order for the doors today. It comes out to about $300 per door on 7 doors. Much more expensive than I would like, but it’s worth it. Someone else will do the installs. All the bedroom and bathroom doors become solid core doors. The Master Bedroom gets a pretty wooden door. And I get a working exterior back door with storm door. The original storm door was removed who knows when.

They will drop the doors off one day and install another. That way I can paint and stain. The pretty door should be stained to match the vinyl floor; something like an oak or pecan. Four doors to paint. One to stain.

Lazarus the External Drive

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

So, the work drive I use for backups died last wk. That was quite a blow since my laptop drive had also died. Aren’t the odds of that supposed to be rare?

Last night, I ripped open the case to get to the meaty old PATA drive in side and plug it into a computer for a last ditch attempt to recover everything. Spinrite ran against it without a single problem. I was stunned. It made a light clicking sound earlier like it was dead. I plugged it into a USB interface and into the Mac and copied everything to Drobo before it could change it’s mind.

That drive got very hot. I guess the USB interface it came with burned out. It’s very good to have that 250 gig or so of data back.

Now, how do I use this for work without encountering the same risk of single device failure? Without spening $500 of my own money that is.

As a side issue, I noticed the number of drives I have left over and not doing anything. There must be 3-5 holding 1 TB easy. I ordered a second Drobo 1st gen to make use of them. The 2nd gens are $500, but the 1st gens are $325 while supplies last. That’s a very good price on a 4 drive RAID5 enclosure. Especially, one that does not need matching drives. It’s too bad Data Robotics doesn’t make a 6 or 8 drive unit.

Inflation?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

The Federal Gov lately has seen fit, on top of funding an expensive “war”, to take on the debt of several industries at the same time. This probably won’t end with Real Estate. Everything is borrowed and has been for at least a decade, if not two or three. These numbers are so astronomical as to not seem real.

Does anyone think we can continue this indefinately?

If we can not, don’t we risk massive, ie. triple or quadruple digit, inflation when no one will lend the USA any more money?

Using an Old Power Mac as a File Server

Monday, September 15th, 2008

8 year old G4s can run 10.4 or 10.5. A software RAID is easy and doable using PATA drives or SATA with a card. These are only USB 1.1 and not the 400mpbs USB 2.0. Again, a card is needed. Memory tops out at 1.5-2 Gig. Some have the 137 Gig hard drive limit issue. CPU upgrades are possible that add a second processor and more than triple the speed. These boxes are plentiful and cheap at $100+ depending on the model and features installed.

Links for how to use an Old Power Mac G4 class as a network file server.

This is a quick, terse walkthrough of screenshots taken under OS X 10.3.3 Panther and OS 9.2.2 to set them up for mutual file sharing using a crossover cable. (This procedure appears almost exactly the same for Jaguar(10.2) and Tiger(10.4) or OS 8.5 and OS 8.6 systems. The system preferences / control panels used are almost identical, and differences seem cosmetic.) If you prefer to see the screenshots for OS X 10.2 Jaguar instead, see this OS X 10.2 walkthru.

Bike Lock “cracked” by Pen

Monday, September 15th, 2008

A 50-year-old lock design was rendered useless last week when a brief post to an internet forum revealed the lock can be popped open with a cheap plastic pen.

On Sunday, bike enthusiast and network security consultant Chris Brennan described opening an expensive Kryptonite bike lock using a ballpoint pen.
Wired: Twist a Pen, Open a Lock

Much to our surprise, we were able to hack our Kryptonite Evolution 2000 U- Lock with a ballpoint pen. This $50 lock is supposed to be one of the best for “toughest bicycle security in moderate to high crime areas”—unless the thief happens to have a Bic pen. We used to use these to lock up our bicycles, but we’re switching to something else ASAP. (Oh, and just to be trite, the pen is mightier than the lock.)
