House Update

Friday, March 9th, 2007

The final movements started taking place on Wed. Today, I got the survey and HUD sheet with the final closing costs. Tomorrow, I’ll go through the final walkthrough with the Realtor. All the utilities are set to move except city services. That’ll be monday. I haven’t even started updating the online services like Netflix and the credit cards.

I’m very excited. The past two days I just bounce in my chair at work. There’s still one more work day till I can move. I didn’t want to burn a whole week moving in so I scheduled off Tue-Thurs. A day of sitting around on Friday might be a welcome relief. My birthday is the beginning of April. So, I’ll take some time then too.

Quite a bit of stuff has already moved into the trashcan. Like the second aquarium and books I don’t need anymore. The computer room looks like when I moved in except for this desk. Boxes are stacked as tall as me in some place. Piles per room. Still need garbage bags. Oh, gotta stop and write a list.

Network Cable Ordered

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I ordered the Network Cable and accessories tonight. Below is the breakdown. The price was about what I figured with two exceptions. The Cable was almost half what I anticipated and it is stranded(pulls easier and safer) and shielded. With the savings from the Cable I get a magnetic cable puller. It was a splurg, but I may be pulling a lot of cable.

There is a temptation to rewire the telephone and cable. Tests at my old apartment showed that just having a phone plugged into old wire slows the whole DSL down by 10-20%. Modern phone wire is Cat3 an older networking cable standard. Cat5 and 6 can be used as phone cable. I estimated I would need 500-600′ of bulk cable. That leaves 500-400′ left over.

Another splurg was the Cat6 Toolless jacks. I doubt I need more than Cat5e or even Cat5 speeds. Those jacks could be mounted on Cat6 cable. However, I thought the next owner of the house would think the cable was the speed printed on the jack not in the wire. Might as well do a good job now.

Vista PC

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

I figured out what to do with the Vista PC I built a month ago when Vista came out. Internet won’t be available for a few weeks after the move and I have this Apt for the whole month. So, this bad boy stays here and I setup the Vista PC to use at the new place.

This computer is sitting in a cardboard box case that I cut down and spray painted. I intend to take the cardboard apart and use it as a pattern for the permanent wood case. You know, like patterns Mom would buy to make dresses. Also, I never solved the WinVNC on Vista problem. Maybe this one will be plugged in w/o a monitor and accessed through VNC. Mmm, but the games wouldn’t be playable and Civ4 needs every clock cycle it can lay it’s grubby little hands on.

I have wiring diagrams for the Network and Home Cable, but I can’t scan them now. The scanner stopped talking to the main computer some time ago and it’s in a box behind me right now. I still intend to scan and post some of the house documents (appropriately redacted) to let you see what they look like. Patience, Christopher, and Heather have yet to buy a house.

Right now I have the parts for two extra computers. On might end up being the Win Home Server, but I’m still left with a spare. There’s enough spare computer crap around here. I would prefer not to lose a hard drive or DVD ROM. So, this would make a good upgrade. If someone has a use for a 3 yr old AMD 2500 speak up. Sorry, it’s not getting mailed. It would be easier to take the case too. This was my first test at quieting the CPU. There is not a CPU fan just a very tall heat sink in a mid to high end case.

Another computer will be built for the Win Home Server, assuming you can buy a copy w/o a computer. This computer will be built directly into the closet that will house the network hub/switch for the house. A caseless or closet computer you might say. Which reminds me I need to order the Network stuff now.

House Update

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

It’s getting sparse posting here. Probably will be for a few weeks. I’m very busy packing. The realtor sent over the Commitment, Tax Certs, etc. This is the work that the Title company did. It’s entertaining that “Chicago Title is a Missouri Company” is printed on the last page.

Let’s see, the Movers are scheduled. Phone and DSL has me on their list. Landscaper was called. He will call back in a week. The number for wires and pipes in the backyard is Texas One Call, 1800-245-4545. Gas, Electric, Cable to do. The first two a probably easy, but there is a Dish on the roof. No idea if it’s in use. Fill in the Change of Address on the Internet on Friday. Gave notice on Thur 3/1. The office assistant said 7 or 8 others had given notice that day and were moving to a house.

There’s still just as much researching going on, but not enough time to format it and post it. I have lots of stuff on trees and raised garden beds written down. I spent a few hours in Sears pricing; Refrigerators, Cooktops, Dishwashers, Freezers, Miter saws, Circular saws, Routers, Sawhorses, work tables, Jigsaws, Planers, etc. There were two Kenmore Elite frigs that I found very attractive. That’s probably the pattern; 2 matches at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Sears. I want to buy it this weekend and have it delivered Tuesday. It would suck to move w/o a refrigerator. Besides, I’m very excited to get a refrigerator I want. Apartments get the cheapest on available. I very rarely get the cheapest anything available. Even one model away can made a difference. All I’ve ever had was the lowest end appliances and I like to cook.

Talked to Grandma about the white obvious mailbox on Sunday. 29 yrs at the Post Office. That was the first thing that she noticed. Nothing on the house is white and yet there is a large, rural, white mailbox next to the front door. A different paint on the post and a smaller box should take care of the problem. The ensuing conversation about door drops vs sidewalk drops and mail slots was very interesting. The short of it is: The mail carriers have a map listing what kind of drop the house is and you have to notify them to change it. A door drop is better than sidewalk. Mail slots are problematic, because they won’t hold the typical amount and size of mail most people get, magazines, circulars, etc. They are intended to hold envelopes, period. Oh, and the little boxes next to the door like Marie and Jessica have don’t hold the right amount of mail either.

Staci’s Baby Shower for Maddison

Flickr: Printing

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Flickr has been great so far for storing photos and making them available online. This morning I went up there print the photos in a set. I don’t need high quality prints. My printer will work just fine. What are my options? Have them printed at Walmart! Great, so in a few days maybe I can pick them up. Unfortunately, that will be way too late, cost way too much, and for too high a quality.

Doesn’t it seem like there always has to be that one massively obvious deficiency in everything. Thank God, I keep these things on my computer. Maybe Windows knows how to print jpegs. Stupid Flickr.

Projects that Require Woodworking

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

I’m looking at purchasing the basic woodworking item and it occurs to me that I don’t know what kind of tools I need. That depends on what to make. So, what projects do I need to make myself?

1st yr
Cabinet doors
Cabinet drawers(new/repair)?
Cabinets
Shelves
Raised Planters
Refinish Gazebo
Computer Case
Supports for closet server
Minor house repairs
Kitchen Table?
Animal hutch/house

2nd yr
Deck?
Fence?
Sunroom?

Update: 2hr later
Looking up each of these types of projects; normal and variations; on the internet is extremely time consuming. So, I took a trip to Barnes & Nobles and saved myself a lot of work.

VS03 Error: The following two files are marked as incompatible

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

I have VS03 and VS05 and .Net 1.1 and .Net 2.0 with associated projects on the same machine. VS03 isn’t used too much and recently a VS03 project coughed up this bug.

The following two files are marked as incompatible:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Vc7\vspackages\cslangsvc.dll
(Version 7.10.3077 [2])

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50215\cscomp.dll
(Version 8.0.50215.44(beta2.050215-4400)[4b000050])

Then compiler cannot be used in this configuration. This is usually caused by installing different flavors of VS and NDP, and not specifying the VS version for the /CompilerSourcePath and /NonNdpSourcePath options when running NdpSetup.

http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=93272&SiteID=1

The solution is to reinstall/repair VS03. Below is the link to the Service Pack, which is a little harder to find now that VS05 is out.

Links to Cheaper Network Cable

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Bulk cable is the most expensive item in the Network Wiring project. These sources have much cheaper cable than my original set.

KZUM’s Exploring Unexplained Phenomena Looking for Producer

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

This is one of my three can’t miss podcasts per week. It’s really a radio show out of Lincoln, Nebraska that has been running 22+ years. They are looking for a producer to help out. My favorite job requirement is: “..has a sense of humor,..”

From Host Scott Colborn

Hello Folks,

A producer is needed to fill a vacancy on the “Exploring Unexplained Phenomena” (“E.U.P.”) radio program staff. Have you been a long-time listener and think you’d like to hang out with some interesting people? Have you recently found the program and think that assisting the “E.U.P.” program would be fun and stimulating?

What is the “Exploring Unexplained Phenomena” radio program?

The “E.U.P.” radio program has been on-air since October of 1984, making it one of the world’s longest-running paranormal talk radio programs. Each week we call guests from around the world and share their interest, research and passion with the listening audience via the KZUM 89.3 FM signal, and world-wide over www.kzum.org . Additionally the radio program is archived and available free of charge within 24 hours of the broadcast at www.friends-of-EUP.mypodcasts.net .

The program is hosted by Scott H. Colborn.

The producers and staff are coordinated by Cathy Behrns, who also co-hosts periodically during the month.

What does a producer do?

A producer for the “E.U.P.” radio program:

initiates the phone call or receives the phone call from people who appear via the telephone during segments of the program,

facilitates greeting an in-studio guest and making sure they are in the broadcast studio, ready to do their segment at the appointed time,

makes the phone call to the guest using a furnished pre-paid phone calling card, and brings the guest on-air,

screens and handles the listener calls during the program,

assists in keeping the producer/staff three-ring book in proper order, and doing the paperwork each week with regard to the pre-paid calling cards, and filing the guest contact info in the book,

has input in suggesting future guests and program content to the host,

can elect to join the host on-air during the program and interact with the guest (not required but optional if the producer wishes to do so),

has a sense of humor,

has an interest in the mysteries of our time,

is interested in being part of a team of unique and talented people,

is or will become a member of KZUM 89.3 FM Lincoln, NE (minimum dues are $25 per year),

has transportation and can get to KZUM’s studios, located in the Terminal Building, 941 “O” St, Suite 1025,

is responsible and says what they are going to do and then does what they say.

Am I there at the KZUM studio each week?

No. Probably once a month; maybe twice a month. This is a volunteer position. The producers are coordinated by Cathy Behrns, and a sign-up list is used to put one’s name down in advance for the next 3 months of Saturday mornings.

As a round-robin team, theoretically each producer might end up producing one program a month. As summer vacation schedules take place, or because of illness or inability to produce the program on a particular date, a producer might be called upon to do several dates per month.

The “show must go on,” even with inclement weather. If you are not able to get to the KZUM broadcast studio’s (rain, snow, sun, etc), or can’t keep your commitments, then please do not sign up for this position. During Nebraska football Saturdays, parking is at a premium and you should be prepared to find parking in advance, or, to arrange to be dropped off and picked up, or, pay the premium parking fee.

How do I know what to do as a producer?

Don’t worry – we’ll train you and also offer additional training through KZUM 89.3 FM, Lincoln, NE. Perhaps this will be a spring-board towards hosting your own radio program ! If you want to interact with the “E.U.P.” radio program guest and the host live on-air – you can, but no one will force you to do so. Should you wish to work behind the scenes and not go on-air, you may. At this time we are in need of one or two additional producers for the program.

How do I apply for the position of producer?

Contact Cathy Behrns, cabehrns@yahoo.com . Please include a day-time and evening phone number, and/or a cell phone number, along with your e-mail address, and indicate in a paragraph or less why you want to be a producer for the “E.U.P.” radio program. Send that information via e-mail to Cathy Behrns, cabehrns@yahoo.com , and we’ll be in touch !

Thanks in advance for listening to the “Exploring Unexplained Phenomena” radio program, and for your support in all ways !

All the best.
Walk in Beauty, Peace. Scott

Gym Power

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

I had often wondered at the gym, why not get electricity from the resistance machines? This is why:

Like many of these projects, the California Fitness setup isn’t going to light up the Hong Kong skyline or even power the club’s own air conditioning. The gym chain has rigged up 13 machines at one of its clubs here. When all of them are in use, the power generated amounts to about 300 watts, roughly enough to run three 27-inch television sets, five 60-watt light bulbs or several hundred video iPods. If all the exercise machines were in use 10 hours a day for a year, the gym could generate roughly $183 worth of electricity. At that rate, it would take about 82 years to pay off the initial $15,000 investment.
